Hashimoto’s Disease and how it relates to Thyroid Issues in Women

By April 7, 2023No Comments

Hashimoto’s Disease, also known as Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis, is the most common cause of an underactive thyroid, known as hypothyroidism. It is an autoimmune disorder that can afflict its victims with many chronic and debilitating health conditions. Although there is no permanent cure for Hashimoto’s Disease, naturopathic medicine has been proven to be a safe and effective way to treat and manage the unpleasant symptoms of hyperthyroidism and allow you to enjoy a happy and productive lifestyle.

What Is Hashimoto’s Disease?

Thyroiditis is the result of the thyroid gland becoming irritated and dysfunctional. It is an autoimmune disorder, occurring when your body produces antibodies that attack the tissues and cells of your thyroid gland, irritating and inflaming it and disrupting its proper functioning. When it is operating normally, your thyroid gland manufactures the essential hormones that are necessary for regulating your metabolism and body temperature and that help to keep your internal organs working normally. Most often, thyroiditis causes the thyroid to underproduce these hormones, a condition called hypothyroidism, with Hashimoto’s Disease being the most common form. Most people begin to show symptoms when they are middle-aged, although it sometimes occurs in younger individuals. Both women and men can suffer from Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis, but it is much more common in women. It appears to run in families, although no genetic cause has been found. Type 1 diabetes and rheumatoid arthritis can increase the risk of these types of autoimmune disorders. There is currently no permanent cure for Hashimoto’s, but it is a very treatable condition.

Naturopathic Treatment Of Hashimoto’s Disease

Hypothyroidism is diagnosed by a review of a patient’s symptoms and health history, a complete physical examination, and blood tests to measure antibody and hormone levels in the body. Once you have been positively diagnosed, we can develop a personalized naturopathic treatment program tailored to your specific needs. My treatments are designed to alleviate the symptoms of Hashimoto’s Disease, increase the thyroid’s production of hormones, and control the various factors that are causing the disorder. Allopathic medical practitioners usually prescribe hormone supplements to be taken daily for life, but those don’t work well for everyone and some people’s bodies can’t tolerate synthetic hormones. I generally prescribe a combination of vitamin, mineral, and iodine supplements, diet modification, exercise, herbal remedies, sleep enhancement, essential oils, and other natural treatments. My holistic approach works to counteract the effects of Hashimoto’s by correcting the imbalances in your body and promoting general good health.
